This brief video showcases several different native methods of slow motion in Premiere Pro CS5 and After Effects CS5. Time Warp (in both Pixel motion and Whole Frame), Frame Blend Time Remapping (directly in a Premiere Pro sequence) and '60 as 24 frame Interpretation' methods were all used. The latter (interpret as...) was a tip by my pal and colleague Karl Soule. In short, the differences between the various 'flavours' are quite dramatic in some spots. The key here is that though there aren't any extreme motion elements, the results are even more telling with the subtle movements. The premise was to use the same 'speed' in each clip, which was effectively playing back at 30% speed (ie, about 1/3 real-time). Minimal grading was done on the clips (first clip is Magic Bullet, others are 32-bit Fast Color in Premiere), and the waterfall shots are straight from the lens...no grading! All shots captured at 1/60, F10 *except* the very first (which was actually F14). It was 110f and so damn sunny, I could barely see...but the Zacuto Z-Finder 2.5x was my absolute SAVIOR! Camera: Canon 7D at 60fps (1280x720p) Lens: Canon EFS 18-135 w/ND filter Computer: MacBookPro COREi7, 8GB Music by: Jason Levine and Fred Fung entitled, "Peak Dark Blip Clave" (c)(p) 2005 BoodahJooMusic (BMI)

Some slow motion cameras shoot interlaced video and some shoot progressive scan. I ...
Some slow motion cameras shoot interlaced video and some shoot progressive scan. I think interlaced video looks smoother than progressive scan when played at less than 30 frames per second. Some cameras define their high-speed frame rates in fields per second and some specify frames per second, and both are sometimes abbreviated as fps which only adds to the confusion. Fields per second refers to interlaced video, in which a frame of video is recorded in two separate scans of even rows and odd rows. Although this difference is not normally noticeable, the effect is especially visible in the still frames at the end of this video. A standard video camera shoots 30 frames per second (60 fields per second), and Sony HD cameras have a high-speed mode that allows you to record 240 fields per second (120 frames per second) while the Samsung SC-HMX20 and Sanyo Xacti HD1010 shoot at 300 fields per second (150 frames per second) in their respective high-speed modes. When a camera specifies frames per second, that normally refers to progressive scan frames, which are like individual photographs instead of two separate scans. Casios Exilim line shoots in progressive scan mode. So beware that 300 fields per second and 300 frames per second are not the same. Although the Casio EX-F1 is capable at shooting at 300, 600, and 1200 frames per second (progressive scan), the clip I used for this comparison was shot at 30 frames per second.
