Link- merrillk.com This video will illustrate the differences between male and female faces. In part 1 of this video, I will compare male and female facial features, bone structure and musculature. In the in the second part of this video, I will do a demonstration. During this demonstration, I will review what we learned in the first part and teach you how to draw the nuances of the male and female face for artistic (art) purposes. During my demonstration, I use a pencil an eraser and a blending stick (stub) also known as a tortillion. Lets look at the differences of the male and female skull first and then we will work our way up to the skin. Male and female children have similar skull shapes. But once children hit puberty, the differences start to appear. Testosterone provokes the growth of certain facial features in males, while female faces remain relatively childlike. The presence of higher levels of testosterone give men a thicker bone structure with more prominent bones. Male faces have a wider, more prominent jaw, chin and cheekbones (also known as the zygomatic arch). The physical size of the male skull is usually larger than the female skull. A very distinct characteristic of a male skull, is a protruding supraorbital ridge also known as a brow line. Female faces are more rounded and tend to have a narrow jaw line. They have a softness that the male face lacks. It carries more fat than the male face, especially in the cheeks. Female faces tend to have thicker ...

This video shows my process for making an illustration (non tradigital). I use illustration markers (usually prismacolor) and color pencils (usually prisma once again) and a wax blending stick. I make my illustrations in two steps. Step 1- I observe my reference drawings or photos and try to see what lies beneath. There is no way to blend markers in the same way that one can blend paint (ironically even with a marker blender) so I lie down the base tones with markers (the first layer). Step 2- Is created with color pencils. Color pencils are mixable / blendable and I mix the color pencils directly above my marker drawing. I use the wax stick to finish the surface and tie everything together. - Merrill kazanjian Achromatic- Black, white and greys. Artwork that is executed without color. Acrylic-
Thicker and stronger than tempera or watercolor paint, Acrylic is a water-based "plastic" paint.
Albumen Print- This printing process is used in photography printing processes. Egg whites are used in the emulsion. Alternative Process- This photography term covers approximately 35 different processes for the final unconventional effect. Armature- A structure used beneath something else for support. For example, a sculptor might create a clay sculpture with a wood or wire armature beneath it as support. Think about the frame of a house being constructed before all of the brick or siding is built on top. Artists Proof- A small group of outstanding prints for the artists use which have been set aside from the edition prints.
Basic color principles- All color theory is based on the principle that 'color is light'.
An object that we see as red contains pigmentation which absorbs all of the colored rays of white light except the red color, which it reflects. White pigment absorbs none of the colored rays, and black absorbs all of the colors of the spectrum. Balance-An art and design principle concerned with the arrangement of one or more elements in a work of art so that they appear symmetrical (even) or asymmetrical (uneven) in design and proportion. Batik- Parrafin or beeswax is used to resist paint or dye on fabric or paper. Designs and patterns are produced on the unwaxed areas. Bisque-
When clay has its first firing in a kiln, it is called bisque ware. At this point, the clay has changed composition and can no longer have water added to it and turned back into a useable material.
Black- The complete absence of light. Because of impurities, you can not create black with pigments. In most black pigments, the is a slight blue trace. A black surface absorbs all light. Brayer-
In printmaking, a Brayer is a roller which is used to apply ink to printing surfaces. Brushes-
Brush styles are designated by a letter following a series number. Some basic brushes to meet your needs: F- Flats, square edge, long bristle B- Brights, flat, square-edged, long sable R - Rounds, pointed bristle L- Longs, flat, square-edge, long sable Filberts- Flat, oval edge, long fibre
Canvas- Fabrics that are prepared for painting. Available in panels, stretched on frames, or obtained by the yard. Ceramics- Used to describe the shaping, finishing and firing of clay. Charcoal and Conte Crayon- In stick form, both give you a very strong, dark line. A disadvantage to these crayons is that they break easily and tend to smudge. Can be found is stick form as well. Chop- An impression made by the artist, or by the printer seal. Chroma- This is the intensity, or strength, or purity of a color. Squeezing paint directly from the tube to the palette is 'full chroma'. Cibachrome-
A process where a photographic print can be made directly from a color transparency. Coil method in clay- As one of the oldest methods used in the formation of pottery, long strands of clay are laid on top of one another, joined by blending the coils together. Collage- Collage is from the French meaning "paste up". The combination of pieces of cloth, magazines and other found objects to create artwork. Collograph- This name is derived from the word 'collage'. It is an image built up with glue and other materials. Color- When light is reflected off an object, color is what the eye sees. The primary colors are red, yellow and blue. The secondary colors are orange, purple and green. Complementary Colors- Complementary colors are those which appear opposite to one another on a color wheel. The complimentary colors are red and green, blue and orange, and yellow and purple. Composition
The arrangement of lines, colors and form. Conte The modern pencil lead invented by Nicolas Conte. It is a black, red or brown chalk.

A helpful trick with observational drawing is to see what you are drawing, as shapes. The basic shape of the human eye is similar to an almond shape. But this is only one of the several shapes that encompass the eye. Think of these shapes as puzzle pieces as you draw a persons eye in the near future. Remember that these shapes will slightly change based upon a persons facial expression. Today, I will show you step by step how to draw the human eye. Pause the video at any time if you need to. Here we go. Step 1: Make a rainbow shape with a circle under it. The top of the circle should be partially blocked by the rainbow. Step 2: Make the bottom lid. Notice that the lower part of the almond shape narrows as it approaches the tear duct on the inner corner of the eye. Step 3: Make the pupil and leave an empty space in the middle for a reflection. The line above, is the eye lid folded back. Step 4: Add the shape of the eyebrow. Step 5: Add a light line below the eye to hint at the eye socket. Step 6: Shade in the eyebrows. Try to notice that they are not one solid shape. Step 7: Add the eyelashes. Try to notice that they are much thicker on the top eye lid. Step 8: Add the final shading. The darkest areas should be directly under the eyebrow and under the eye. I hope that this video helped you. If you still need help go to merrillk.com and download a print version of this lesson. This print version will give you step by step instruction through pictures and words. Once you are ...

Two people inspired me to create this portrait. Nelson Mandela, the first democratically elected president of South Africa is obviously one. The other is an artist named Igor Kazarin who has a popular art channel on youtube called portraitdrawing. I wanted to try his amazing Dry Brush Technique which combines oil paint, watercolor paper and a kneaded eraser. I added my own touch to this portrait by finishing it with a prismacolor pencil. -Merrill kazanjian If you want to try Dry Brush Technique, you will need: - Watercolor paper (At least 150 LBS) - Oil Paint (I am using Lamp Black.....this technique works in with color too) - Kneaded Eraser - I also used Prismacolor Color Pencils at the end (optional)

merrillk.com Today, you are going to draw Lebron James...Never draw before? Thats OK! I broke this process down in to simple steps for you. Miami Heat. I recommend that you pause the video at the end of each step and get in the habit of looking at the reference image on the screen at least once every five seconds. To make this as easy as possible, I uploaded a print version of this lesson to my website. Go to merrillk.com and type in LeBron in the search box. Or, if you are watching on youtube, click the link to the right. All that you will need is a pencil and some paper to draw and aq tip or a blending tool to do the shading in the second part of this video. Good luck! Here we go! This part has 24 steps and it will be followed by a Lebron shading tutorial. Step 1- Make a rainbow shape Step 2- Make another rainbow shape above the first, with a slightly higher arc. This will be LeBron's headband. At the end of this step, it should resemble a banana shape. Step 3- Make one more rainbow shape slightly above the top of the headband this will be Lebrons hair. Step 4- Is a little tricky. Add the 2 shapes that you see. Notice that the one on (your) left is slightly larger than the one on (your) right. Step 5- Add the backward L shape that you see. Step 6- Add the shape that looks like the "little dipper" (pot shape). Step 7- Add the next 2 lines. Notice that these two lines connect with the bottom of the shape from step 4. Step 8- Add the 2 small rainbow shapes for the tops of ...

Its time for YOU to draw Beyonce. All that you will need is a pencil with an eraser, a blending stump or Q-Tip and a large index card. Be sure to stop the video at the end of each step and look at the reference picture on the computer screen. No drawing experience? Doesnt matter. You are gonna surprise yourself! Step 1- Make a rainbow shape at the top of your large index card. Notice that the top of the rainbow is at the very top of the card. Then make the oval Notice that the bottom of the oval is more pointed than the top. Step 2- Continue the line at the end of the rainbow down to the mid point of the card and then curve it upwards to the bottom of the oval. Do this on both sides. Step 3- Try to match the two lines that I just added. Use the sides of the index card to gage their accuracy. Step 4- Use your observation skills to draw the two lines that I just added. This will eventually be the bottom of Beyonce's left arm. Step 5- Do the same for the top of her left arm. Step 6- Now, create the top of her forearm. Hint, notice the shape that is formed in the background, think of this shape as a puzzle piece and use it to tweak the shapes around it. Step 7- Create the V shape on her dress. Notice that the bottom of the V ends at the mid point of the shape that was formed in the previous step. Step 8- I slightly changed the shape at the bottom of the hair on the left and created a neck. I also made another shape within the hair. Step 9- I created another shape within the ...

Tonight we dine in Hell. If you are up for the challenge, I will teach you how to draw a very angry greek man who likes to kick people in to bottomless pits. It doesnt matter if you are new to drawing the more you sweat here , the less you'll bleed in battle. Just follow my step by step instructions... and remember...No retreat, no surrender. Our pencils will block out the sun...Then we shall draw in the shade. Merrill.....um this is Madness Madness? THIS IS kazanjianM!! Be sure to pause the video at the end of each step. Step 1: Draw in the Beard Shape. Be sure to notice that it is slightly asymetrical. Step 2: Draw in the shape for the hair. Notice that the shapes from steps 1 and 2 are equal in height. Step 3: Draw in the ovals for the eye sockets and the ear shape Step 4: Add the shape for his clothing. This shape does not have to be perfect but notice that it is slightly wider at the neck. Step 5: is a difficult step. The sword shape is slightly taller than the head and it points away from the body and towards the left upper corner of the page. The fingers will be heavily shaded later so it is more important that you focus on the shape of the hand. Take extra time on this step. Step 6: Add some light lines to define the chest and left arm. Do not press hard, just hint at their existence, they will be shaded heavily later. Add an arrow going through Leonidas' chest...... Step 7: Take your time and add the detail to Leonidas' face. Take extra time to observe the ...
